Video Walkthrough:
For this assignment, students created a page responsive website which uses visual communication design skills to make a positive change. I chose the gender split in motorsport careers, as this directly affects my future career path. Despite an ever-growing female fanbase, the efforts made in motorsports to get more women in the industry has failed. A large number of existing programs focus on getting women into the drivers’ seats, but not in careers in other aspects of motorsports. My website focuses on providing resources for women to find careers in motorsports as a whole.
Overall, creating this website was a unique challenge in many ways. As designing for digital environments becomes more and more necessary for a career in design, I am grateful for the opportunity to develop my abilities in digital design. Websites need to be more spacious than print designs to avoid feeling cramped, especially as people expect to have to scroll on a page. Further, legibility is a huge concern, from text color to font size. Smaller fonts may not be as feasible for digital design compared to print, where 10-12 point font size is still extremely legible. Though it is typically relatively easy to translate the desktop version to tablet, many of my pages had three to four columns, which were just barely too small on the tablet. Therefore, I had to do some shuffling to keep everything legible. Overall, as I hope to be a designer who works in a variety of mediums and disciplines in the future, this website and the skills I developed while creating it is crucial in my learning.
