Taking inspiration from board games such as The Game of Life, Monopoly, and Forbidden Island, dumayo is a collaborative board game meant to subtly highlight the challenges immigrants face. The name comes from the Filipino word "migrate," a nod to my own heritage as well as the informational poster I created previous to this project. As the main focus of this assignment was interaction design, I chose to create a board game to highlight the struggles immigrants face in an immersive manner. I meticulously planned every aspect of the game the player would interact with. At the end of this project, I had created a fully playable game.
The use of primary colors and green gives the game an entertaining yet educational energy, while the simple graphical elements keep it from being too elementary. I wanted to balance the realistic aspects with creating an enjoyable game, and as such I introduced both “help” and “obstacle” cards. My meticulous planning paid off, and I created not only a visually appealing game, but one that will be fun to play as well.
