Each year, Sweetwater Academy hosts Rock Camp. Students are brought in each week for six weeks to create unique bands. Throughout their week, they hone their skills to perform a three-song set. Like any band, they work together to come up with a name and album cover idea, with the Graphic Artist interns working to bring their ideas to life. The main parameter with these is to have each band member's face visible. Through a mix of image compositing and illustrative efforts, these kids' visions become a reality.
These album covers were not only the bulk of my work for the summer, but the most fun. I honed my technical skills in Photoshop and learned how to translate the most bare-bones ideas into a full-fledged album cover. I carefully crafted a game plan for each cover, determining what images I needed to find from stock and which ones needed to be taken in the photo studio. I worked with our photographers to plan everything from the lighting to the angles to the shot list for each album cover. I also crafted a unique type treatment for each cover.
Though a parent isn't supposed to have favorites, some highlights from these covers include: Pink Noise, Seven in the Chamber, Polar Opposites, Mystery Band, Inc., and Trans-Sylvanian Orchestra.
